Ergobaby Omni Dream Baby Carrier Review

The Ergobaby Omni Dream Baby Carrier is the latest model in the bestselling Ergobaby Omni range. This superb range of carriers really does live up to the hype and they’re THE choice for many new parents looking for a multi-position carrier.

The thoughtful design is optimised both for babies’ and parents’ comfort, making them brilliantly supportive. Their bucket-shaped seat makes them the most supportive front-facing carrier on the market.

Last year Ergobaby released the latest version of the Omni, the Ergobaby Omni Breeze – which quickly became our new favourite thanks to it’s slimline design and soft-touch fabric.

The new Ergobaby Omni Dream Baby Carrier is essentially identical to the awesome Ergobaby Omni Breeze, with the same shape, features, and functions: it’s just made of brushed cotton fabric instead of the Breeze’s airy mesh material.

Here’s what else you need to know…

IT FITS ALL MUMS AND DADS

This Dream, like the Breeze model, has contoured shoulder straps that are sewn at a slightly different angle to the previous Omnis, offering a better fit for petite mums who may otherwise struggle with the bulk and heftiness of other Ergobaby carriers

Realistically, this carrier will fit almost all mums from a UK 8 to 22, and dads from XS to XXL

YOU CAN USE THE ERGOBABY OMNI DREAM FROM DAY ONE

The superbly adjustable body panel means the Ergobaby Omni Dream doesn’t need the thick, cumbersome newborn insert of the much older Ergobaby 360 models.

It’s safety tested as suitable from 7lbs (3.2kg) and it genuinely is brilliant for babies of that weight, so you can use it literally from birth.

It gives a much better fit for tiny newborns, compared to the Omni 360 and the Omni 360 Cool Air Mesh, which have a larger body panel and are best from around 4-6 weeks+.

Top tip: For babies who are only a few weeks old, you’ll need to ensure you’re wearing the waistband high up on your torso, with your baby’s bottom seated in the bucket-shaped base of the carrier – otherwise the body panel will feel too big for them

THE ERGOBABY OMNI DREAM IS ONE OF THE BEST FRONT-FACING CARRIERS ON THE MARKET

Like all the Omnis, you can carry your baby outwards facing in the Dream. It’s bucket-shaped ‘seat’ means your baby will be well supported in a comfy, ergonomic position with their knees higher that their bottom.

Their legs won’t be dangling down and they won’t feel as heavy as they would when outwards facing in a BabyBjorn, Infantino or just about any other front-facing carrier. So if you’re looking for a great front-facing carrier: there’s nothing better than this.

Babies should only be carried front-facing once they have full head and neck control and some upper body control, usually a minimum of 4 months. Many parents enjoy having their baby facing outwards, but remember this outwards position isn’t essential: Babies are well able to look around in a parent-facing carrier, especially if one or both of their arms are above the top of the carrier allowing them greater freedom of movement and a wider field of vision.

IT WILL LAST UNTIL YOUR BABY IS 1.5 – 2 YEARS

The Ergobaby Omni Dream’s body panel gets wider, by adjusting with Velcro tabs concealed on the inside of the waistband; and taller, using the top set of buttons).

This means the carrier will grow with your baby and will last until your baby is around 1.5 to 2 years old – and you could get away with carrying a petite 3 yr old in it too, albeit for short periods only!

It’s safety tested up to 45lbs (20kg); but remember a comfy fit is determined by baby’s height, your shape, and both of your carrying preferences, rather than just your baby or toddlers’ weight.

BUILT IN LUMBAR SUPPORT PAD, SLEEP HOOD AND ZIP UP POUCH

The integrated lumbar support panel will give some relief to wearers with lower back issues. The removable zip-up pouch on the waistband is big enough to store your keys, phone and wallet; plus there are two handy hidden extra pockets built into the side pockets.

There’s also clever wind- and sun-protective sleep hood tucked away into a zip-up pocket, which simply poppers onto the shoulder straps; ideal for naptimes and blustery days.

WHICH EXTRAS ARE WORTH BUYING?

We strongly recommend the extra Drool Pad to stop any rubbing on your baby’s face, especially when they’re teething – and to protect the carrier from dribble and cut down on your laundry!

The pop-on rain cover is super helpful extra if you don’t have a babywearing coat.

ANY DOWNSIDES?

It’s not as light and breathable as the soft mesh Breeze model.

It’s not the absolute back carrier, especially for petite mums who will find their baby sits a little low on their back. It’s fine for most parents, but if you’re looking for a supportive back carrier for daily use then do check out these recommendations.

I’m kind of splitting hairs here as it’s an awesome carrier, but in the interest of balance: The Omni Breeze works FRACTIONALLY less well than the other Omnis if you’re wearing it with crossed (‘X’) straps.

That’s because (a) some people need two hands to undo the new safety buckles that connect the straps to the body panel; and as the shoulder straps are more contoured, they may not side quite as neatly across your back. For most people, neither of these things will be a big deal.
